I went on vacation for 10 days and when I came back, I started hearing this sound that definitely wasn't there before. Good thing my lease is almost up I suppose....
Got a follow up here to share... my 15 SQ4 is currently at my dealer for year 3 service and it turns out my steering column was in fact going bad (and the reason for this whining noise I described) and they are replacing the entire steering column. All covered under warranty, dropped off the car yesterday, and should get it back tomorrow. So if anyone else has this issue, definitely get it checked out. My dealer said it's a known issue.

*bumping an old thread since I'm experience the same issue.

It's a faint, ticking/crackling noise coming from deep in the driver's footwell during light acceleration, occuring only at 1800-2800rpm.

sounds exactly like those harddrives you'd find on a very old computer

put another way, it sounds similar to milk being poured over a bowl of rice krispies.

let me know if anyone can relate. I have a 2018. not sure if it's a "big enough deal" to have the dealer look at it. but it's irritating and distracts from the driving experience

Garage
I had the same issue and when I took it to the dealership they said they didn't hear any abnormalities when testing it. They said to monitor it and see if it gets any worse. If not, then I shouldn't worry about it. So far it hasnt gotten worse and I don't notice it as much.

I never commented with a follow up... so for the record, it turned out to be steering column failure. They flushed the fluid and it was good for maybe a week, but then the sound started faintly coming back. So it must have been a bigger issue. But I don't know because my lease was up so I turned the car back in a few days later and then it was no longer my problem
@HarvardLlama, i don't believe this is the same thing you're describing. My sound was coming right from the steering column, not by the footwell. And it was not a tick, it was a whirrr.

had a friend who was a former VWAG tech drive the car. he says it sounds exactly like bad valve lifters.
i believe our lifters are hydraulic (as with most modern turbo DI engines).
it's either the lifters, or sounds like (to me) possibly injector noise.

but again, the "buzz" only happens when throttle is applied at low RPMS. and ONLY under load. (no sound in Neutral at the same engine speed).

having the dealer check it out on Friday. will keep you guys posted.
