2017 back up camera in a 2016?

1099 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Tealle71
Hi, does anyone know if you can swap out the 2017 camera into a 2016 with no issues on the dash deck? I am wanting a better quality camera, without having to replace the whole dash/center console, as that was a suggestion from the dealer.

If it is not possible, that is ok, just want to exhaust all my options prior to going to the extremes.

TIA for all positive suggestions.

Have a great day.

Curious...what is the difference in the camera specification ? I understand 2017's went to the 360 degree view but I had thought the rear camera was the same. 360 requires additional (to 2016 setup)...front camera & the 2 external mirror mounted cameras. Then, with a little software trickery, multiple camera views. Pity they didn't adopt earlier...can be a pain to park our oldies at times.

Thanks, Mark. I wish someone could tell me the specifications of the camera quality. To my understanding and research, the camera quality is what is (outside of the 360 view) the bigger upgrade, as the picture quality on the 14 to 16 is super blurry and grainy. I posted this question to see if that is correct and if anyone has had any experience in swapping them out. My hopes are to see a somewhat affordable option vs. swapping out the entire console, center console and trunk handle. Hahaha! ;) The dealer here stated that the "Sky view" ie, the 360 was not available on all 2017 models, but was an option, but the camera definitely was and is "swappable" but with additional options (read, buy the new head unit, surround, center console and trunk handle 😖).
Can't help with specs I'm afraid Tealle...Maserati don't publish much about this sort of thing. I would have thought if the physical connection at the camera end (trunk end) is the same, I'm not sure why there would be problems with the head unit...but, I have no facts to back this up. I guess if you could get your hands on a 2017 camera, it wouldn't take a lot of work to hook it up & see what happens.
One point your spot on with...they are rubbish cameras. Backing into my garage (low light) looks like your backing into a muddy pond on the camera. My VW Golf camera runs rings around this low resolution set up. Good luck anyway. Post if you work it out...I may be tempted to do the same...Cheers Mark

I have a 2016 and understand what you are saying. I swear that I read one time that it's not actually the camera quality but the display quality/resolution that limits the images. Of course, if it's really deteriorated due to some damage on the camera itself that's another thing, but I'm not sure just an upgrade to a 2017 camera is going to give you the results of the 2017 and up head unit.

I have zero to back this up, but for some reason that sticks in my head.

Just thought I'd mention it as something to check out before committing to the camera swap. Hoping I'm totally wrong though :)

Thanks, Shaummy! I am researching and even joined the Maserati Forum, to see if any of the other models have this challenge. There was a UK post for a Quattroporte, that was experiencing glitching on a 2014 and the dealer there swapped for a "current camera" and it improved, but was still "muddy", so my thought is that it is truly the head unit and not necessarily the camera alone. More of a total issue and having to swap the whole kit and caboodle... 😫
Good morning, all! For anyone that still may be following this thread, here is the reply from my dealer regarding the "swap out" option:

Me: "Also, my iPhone 14 connects via Bluetooth, but state’s messaging and calls are not compatible. Do you know if there is a way to connect directly with the system via a cable instead of Bluetooth? My phone is new, and I did try to do an update, but the system stated I have the most recent update installed of iOS16.3.1. When I googled it, most responses state it needs a software update for the newer phones, any ideas on the camera/BT issues?"

FMSD: "Sorry, this is happening still, the radio / infotainment system in your car has not had any updates available for several years. I would make sure the iPhone is fully up to date with the latest iOS software but if that doesn't fix it, we don't have any newer software available from Maserati for the 2016-18 systems. I don't know if it will be possible to retrofit the new style screen into your car because the center arm rest and dash will all need to be changed and we don't have a way to know for sure which pieces will have to change because each one fits into the next piece of the puzzle differently on the newer Ghiblis. If I were to guess, I'd think somewhere in the $7-10k range, but I really don't know."

So the end result is, deal with using BT only and a muddy version of your BU camera.. hahahahaaha!!!

Thanks for sharing the journey and closing the loop. I've not seen a cost effective solution. There might be someone mechanically inclined that has found a solution with combination factory and aftermarket parts, but haven't seen anything posted. And with 2023 the last "planned" production year for Ghibli, I can't imagine Maserati has any interest in updating software on older generations

Good morning, All! I have an update... IF you are not still under any warranty or extended warranty (unfortunately, I am!), you can get an Infotainment head unit on Amazon and Ebay for a 18-20 for around $400, and the 2018-20 camera from Scuderia for around $570ish (depending on color codes - black chrome is more!) and a center console unit(used on ebay) for$375 - 450!!! I am trying to convince this Hubster this is the route to go... still cheaper than the dealer. I did watch a few youtubers that had done it and it is amazing to see the difference in the picture and quality of the "radius lines"!!!

*If any of you do this, please take pics/videos to help my argument to my husband in this journey of wanting to be able to see what the heck is behind me!!!

**one of the youtuber videos had even figured out a hack to be able to turn the cameras on while driving!!! It was really cool to see!!!

***In regards to the warranty, we have the extended, and were informed by the warranty company (Select Premium Auto warranty) that IT WILL VOID the warranty! :cautious: So no go for me.... waaaaahhhh!!!

New question for all my fellow Ghibies!!! Has anyone tried to just swap out the screen, by itself, with a 17/18/19 screen, not the whole infotainment system, but JUST the SCREEN???? I found a 2019 on eBay for $400 and I am curious, as all the plugs and fitament seems to match, with a corresponding bezel for $150 and am tempted to try it, but want to know if anyone has tried this option first????

TIA for any tips/advice/info!

Have a lovely day!
