Hi

A few months ago my top up Adblue message came up saying I can only do a further 1000 miles before the engine will stop if I do not top up. A few months later I topped up with around 4 litres of Adblue but the message would not go away and the mileage countdown was still active. I then topped up a further 2.5 litres (tank is now full) and still the error and mileage counter will not go away.

I found this video on YouTube (
) where the guy is able to disable that message to allow for the car to be started. I got my local garage to try this with their Autel machine but the error kept coming back.

Last week I took the car to a Italian car specialist. He put it on the computer and no errors were coming up. On the dash the Adblue level is showing as empty. He diagnosed that the Adblue tank assembly would need to be replaced as the sensor is within the tank and it is clearly not picking up that the fluid has been topped up.

Maserati have quoted the tank at £1800 + VAT. Eurospares have got one used at around £700 + VAT. Would it be risky to get a second hand one?

Anyone else had this issue? Do you think there might be simpler fix? Is there an alternative to replacing the tank?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi Alal,
You can try to fill the tank up completely and then have someone with a good diag software recalibrate the Adblue gauge to see if it reads OK again.
If not I believe the Adblue parts are available separately, do a bit of research on the net.
This is the part.

But I think the part is ultrasonic welded to the tank.
Alternatively, you can have the Adblue reprogrammed out of the ECU.
The level system is a sonic system, so not repairable.
You can just try to recalibrate.

Hi

Thanks for your response

Unfortunately my issue is finding that someone who can recalibrate. I'm in the east part of London and there seems to be no Maserati/Italian specialists. The ones I have found around London are all from the 'change the part' school of thought. This specialist I took the car to knows seems to know his stuff and is very confident that changing the tank will resolve the issue. I may just have to bit the bullet on this one and change the tank to at least allow me to drive the car.

If I change the tank would you know if it is a case of just replacing the tank and it should be ok or would some sort of calibration need to be done with a diagnostic tool? Just trying to see if I can get it done locally or whether I need to take it to someone who knows these cars.

Emblem are excellent. There's Auto Alfa in Basildon. Feli might well be able to help. He's looked after most of my cars for many years.

If you find someone who has a Launch Xdiag Pro diagnostic tool, he will be able to recalibrate the tank, I have one but I live in the South of France, a bit a a trek!!!

You might also have an Adblue cristalization problem, it happens some time with Adblue, there are some products on the market to get rid of Ablue cristals.

One thing on mine is that I never let the Adblue level go below half to minimize the amount of air in the tank, does that do anything or not? I like to think it helps.
