Bad Rear Diff - UGH!!!

Well, I had been fighting the urge to take it to the dealer to see why the rear end was making so much noise. I thought it might have been the tires but replaced those and still it was extremely loud inside the car. I had a feeling it might be the diff was just hoping it wasn't. Well took it in on Friday to the dealer and sure enough they found metal shavings in the fluid and confirmed the diff was bad.

I've only had her for about 3 weeks, almost 4, I'm going to contact the dealer I purchased it from in AZ and see if they will help out with the bill.

Needless to say I'm having the dealer replace it.

Sorry to hear. Many reputable dealers will assist or cover if it's still within 30-90 days ... unless they sold the car as is. Highly unusual for Ferrari dealer to not treat customers right.
Hopefully they can address. I'd have to look and see end dates, but there was a special warranty extension to the 2014-2015 key drivetrain components that was effective in select states based on where you bought vehicle or lived. Regardless selling dealer should help out since car is so close to purchase date.

Found the thread. Sadly doesn't list rear differential warranty being amended ... just the transmission and driveshaft to 7 years ... in certain states list in the document.

It is worth the call to where you bought it from. If you are getting it serviced at an authorized Maserati dealership, check with their finance department as im sure they have an extended warranty package to offer. The local dealership in KC offers an extended warranty from a company called MAP (can only buy from a dealership). I think additional 5 year 60k miles cost 4500ish with 100 dollar deductible on any claim. I also got a quote from libertybellauto when I was looking at a 2017 with 20k miles for 3 year 36k for $2900 or 5 year 60k for $3600. Since I still have manufacturer warranty I was going to wait and see if I'm still in the car 2 years from now...after a month, I can't imagine I'm driving anything different 5 years from now.

Thanks BGower - I agree w/ you I feel like I'll be driving this particular 2014 for the next (at least 2 years) 4 years. I think I want a 2019/2020 in about 3 to 4 years. I don't really care what others say about the quality, I mean I get it to a degree but honestly every car manufacturer has their flaws. My wife gets the newer suv and honestly I don't mind. I like the sporty sedans. I'll call the dealer tomorrow and keep this thread updated. Thanks all.

I’m not sure why Maserati sells these cars with differentials and transfer cases as “no Maintenance”. I changed the fluids on the front and read diff as well as transfer case about a month ago. All fluids were dirty, the read diff was the worst and very stinky too lol. No metallic particles in any units though (knock on wood.)

It even seems the car drives much smoother, maybe it’s just in my head.

It is interesting they don't have a service interval listed. In fact, they list quantity and specs, but go as far as to say no topping or maintenance is required, (that what the (2) means).

Sorry to hear that. Bought a sq4 MY18 and it had some lights on, traction, Awd, and brake system. And they had to replace the read diff. Thankfully was under warranty. Im sure is super expensive. Hey should def cover that under dealer warranty usually 90 days. Best of luck. Love maserai but repairs would bankrupt you.

Thanks Massi - working with the dealer I purchased it from to figure out what they will do. I have to be honest it's not as bad as I had imagined, but wasn't planning on spending that kind of money either. Hopefully after this I'm issue free for the next couple of years.

Just posting an update - Found out today the diff is backordered so it's 2-3 weeks out. However, Maserati NA is working with my dealership to try and speed up the process in finding a new diff. I'll keep everyone posted. Also, the selling dealership is reviewing all of the paperwork and will get back to me; they still have not yet given me an update on what they will offer me.

Hopefully, they get one for you soon. The whole Covid 19 thing has put parts inventory in short supply. Suspect they are getting shipped from Italy. And Maserati typically, won't offer parts from a low mileage wreck, (some dealers may suggest that as an opportunity, but they are supposed to use only new parts).

That sounds very cool and maybe they are making an effort to get back to that type of engagement with owners and Maserati enthusiasts. I sure hope so and for now I'm thoroughly impressed. They even followed up with me today saying the part should arrive at my dealer early next week! YAY!!! It will be nice to get the car back on the road and enjoying it again, even if were starting our rainy season LOL.

I have my 2014 sq4 for 3 years now and when I bought it from the maserati dealership used with around 68k miles
soon after the transfer case went bad. Paid out of my pocket bought a new take off unit from ebay for $800
and had my indy shop install for another $800, no issues. The stealership wanted over $5000
How has maserati customer service helped you? by finding you a differential or helping with the costs? I wouldnt
be paying the stealership $4000 for a differential. Especially a 7 year old car that goes for 20k
there are plenty of low mileage differentials going for $500 on ebay and any good indy shop can install. Good luck
I been enjoying mine for 3 years even after the transfer case repair

Hey all, Just a quick update. Got the new diff installed today....WOW what a difference I can actually drive the car and hear myself now LOL. Incredibly smooth and the dealership was outstanding.

Also, big shout out to Felicia with @MaseratiCares who got my part to the dealership fast and kept me informed along the way.
