The 2014 Maserati Ghibli has been included on the 2014 North American Car of the Year long list. The Ghibli will be up against some tough competition to take home the big prize though. Last year the Cadillac ATS took home the top prize, and this year Cadillac has two vehicles in the running, the CTS and the ELR. The car makers with the most entries on the list are Kia and Chevrolet with five each.

The long list will be trimmed down to about 12 vehicles in the Fall, once all 50 jurors have had a chance to drive everything. This list will be narrowed down again to the top 3 before the winner is announced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

What do you think of the list? Any snubs? Any undeserved nominations? Could the Ghibli win?

Here is the full list:

I love the Ghibli, but normally these awards prioritize innovative impact, so I doubt the Ghibli will win. The Ghibli is no doubt a fantastic car, but it's not innovative in a world of increasing electrification of the automobile. I bet one of the EVs or plug-in hybrids will win the award.

Now if a Ghibli plug-in hybrid with extended range is developed, THAT could win.

I agree that a hybrid or EV has an advantage as far as technological innovation, and just being relevant to what's going on in the car industry right now. I see some type of compact winning the prize. It has to have cargo room, fuel efficiency, great design, and comfort.
