THis is amazigg thank you so much i will be trying this tomorrow. So my car actually got stuck on “please wait. Loading” screen on the bluetooth screen. Idk whats wrong with it i attached a pic. If anyone has any idea. Please let me know.
If it keeps doing this then you may need to replace your HFM module. Ask the dealer.

Has anyone tried this on a non-US model? I'm currently on a SW version of 13/50/99, but I'm concerned that in NZ we may have different radio setups (no digital radio, for example) and I wouldn't want to break that. I've never had any Bluetooth connectivity issues though.

It's always bugged me that the Bluetooth didn't show any artist/track information, so if anyone figures out how to update the HFM that would be interesting. I live 640km from my nearest Maserati dealer, so I'd rather do it myself.

Thanks
Conrad

AFAIK to update the HFM you will need to gain physical access to its USB port by taking the trim apart around it and unscrewing it, which is apparently a pain in the behind.

You never had BT issues! What phone do you use, may I ask?

I have an iPhone X, I'm always on the latest IOS (At present 13.5.1). I've had the car (Ghibli S 2015) for about 18 months and literally maybe only had bluetooth issues 2 or 3 times - and even on those occasions, turning bluetooth off and on sorted it.

I initially had the same firmware (13/50/99), and at best, my iPhone 11 would connect 50% of the time. My dealer replaced the handsfree module and there was only minimal improvement.

Later, I updated the firmware as shown in this thread and things were mostly unchanged. After initially connecting, I was unable to use Bluetooth for almost a week before the connection started showing any improvement at all.

My car is back at the dealer and I let them know about the handsfree firmware update that should show the artist and track info via Bluetooth. They admitted that they get a lot of Bluetooth complaints and will be escalating this to Maserati in Italy for a resolution. I’m hoping for the best.

Glad to see your dealer taking it seriously. I hope the resolution is an official UConnect VP4 retrofit kit lol!

Seeing the last update our UConnect got was this very update and that the HFM module has been in commission since 2010 and basically thrown away after our UConnect (the newer ones have BT and the whole system integrated with the screen), plus literally the only new car that still uses this UConnect is Dodge Journey. I doubt Chrysler will care enough to go through the effort to fix this BT issue. Or even worse, the hardware itself could be too old to be fully compatible with modern phones. I don’t see Chrysler going back and releasing a new hardware revision.

A friend of mine has a 2017 Ghibli S and it’s mostly the same as my 2016 except for UConnect. There were comments saying retrofitting would be impossible due to a different CANBus and whatnot but if I’m not mistaken, her gauge cluster is the same as mine (2018+ has a new higher-res display), which leads me to believe they had to come up with some kind of retrofitting scheme for the 2017 model year cars. But again, all this is just as much effort compared to Chrysler digging through ancient code to try and find a fix for modern phones.

I may be just spouting out garbage at this point haha.

So I had the same 13/50/99 firmware and updated to latest version 16/21/D7 without issue. Also, using iPhone 11 with 13.5.1. I rarely had or have connection issues, occasional that was a quick restart to connect. The new version is connects a little faster. I did refresh my connection and had to re-apply my equalizer and radio settings as this update took me back to neutral positions.

There was a Maserati campaign when these cars first came out for an HFM firmware update. My 2014 was done under warranty. I was clueless as it was one of many updates for that car. Makes me wonder why I didn't have any problems with connections, like others mentioned.

Maserati doesn't reimburse the dealer for these types of firmware updates unless the customer complains and car is under warranty. I questioned because why wouldn't you run through these types of things during the annual preventive maintenance? I think some dealers are more proactive based on their experiences to provide these updates while car is under warranty .... which is good.

Service advisor indicated the HFM USB access is pretty straightforward and located under the steering column just above the lower dash cover if I wanted to do another update myself to get the metadata on the screen. Maserati isn't very transparent on software/firmware ... suspect because its not their expertise and coming from the Chrysler business unit.

Thank you for the insights. It would be very counterintuitive if the newer HFM firmware update that gives me metadata displays does not cover the update you mentioned lol! Did your service advisor happen to tell you how we can obtain the HFM firmware ourselves?

I think my update was part of the early problems with these HFM units, (2014-2015), and don't recall if there was a security flaw "fix" also bundled in that update. It appears they have been replacing the HFM and than adding the updated firmware. I was the first to ask about the metadata display which they didn't even know about. I think our phones, set-up and versions also play a role in why this is so inconsistent ... not to mention these are old units with no further technical support.

I'll have to ask about access to firmware update and required scan tool, but found a service tech's post on 2013 Chrysler 300 firmware update "The HFM (hands free module) can only be updated by your dealer using witech and a special USB cable. They'll have to reset the module first".

For those experiencing functionality problems, You can reset the HFM by pulling the fuse or performing a full capacitive discharge. This should restore functionality. After that, your dealer can update the HFM software.

Maybe if sc00bk reads this post he can chime in ... he's a Maserati service tech who might have experience with this too.

To answer my own question I did the upgrade to 16/21/D7 on my NZ Ghibli S 2015, no issues at all.

Well, I just got my car back from the dealership and it was a complete waste of time.

I brought the car back to them because my Bluetooth connection started giving me problems within 2 days of having the HFM replaced.

I told them about the HFM firmware updates mentioned in this thread and even gave them photos to prove that artist and song information was possible. They replaced the HFM and reached out to Maserati that simply told them there was no software update available.

In the end, my car sat at the dealer for a week while I drove around in a Toyota 4Runner loaner (I have no idea why they thought that was a good option for Maserati and Ferrari owners). Then, after getting my car back, the Bluetooth stopped working within 10 minutes when I stopped for gas on the way home.

For anyone that has successfully had your firmware updated to include track info with Bluetooth (and has a somewhat stable Bluetooth connection), please share your dealership information so I can relay that to my service department.

It’s amazing that they have such high labor rates ($199/hr), but still need me to do all the troubleshooting.

Wow... A Toyota loaner???

I get all my work done at Alfa/Maserati @ Santa Monica (SoCal). They gave me 18/19 Ghibli loaners every single time. I may pay them a visit soon and I'll ask for my service history because I remember they specifically told me on paper my old HFM firmware version and the new HFM firmware version they installed.

Also... I highly suspect Maserati HQ doesn't have a clue about any of this lol. I even suspect my dealer reached out to Chrysler instead.

The Maserati service departments really don't understand these systems. Maserati provides limited information as needed to resolve customer concerns. As mentioned, these units have more support through Chrysler, especially the older units which have little to no support.

16/21/D7 continues to run fine on my 2014. One of my concerns was the dB boost for the unit and if it changed with the new software update. The original cars came with 7 dB boost and terrible bass. The band aid fix was dealer increasing unit to 10 dB boost, (not what we can do with equalizer). I restored my equalizer settings to the optimum setting published on this forum, (a professional setup one of our "premium" units and shared best curve), and believe this update did not change the dB boost. The way to tell is if you increase bass boost via equalizer you should hear a noticeable difference, if not, than the unit is likely on the lower 7 dB amp setting. Plus the dB boost is direct to the amp, not the radio.

For me, not worth spending +/- $200 to have a service tech update software to add the song metadata to my display since my car is outside of warranty. I'd be better suited to add the "go between module" to accommodate android auto or apple car play ... you get so much more functionality direct from your smart phone. I've seen the Andream adapter on BMW's and they work great. I think we have at least one user of similar technology on this forum, (AlphaWIP).

It's a bit of a pain to install but the thing works pretty well.

Introduction - The Story
Longtime Ghibli owners know how bad the Bluetooth functionality of our UnConnect / Maserati Terrible Connection (MTC) is. On some days it would work normally, other days it would refuse to connect to any device. Repeated dealer visits and replacing the HFM module yielded zero success. My dealer flashed the HFM module firmware to the latest version, which gave me song metadata but still didn't solve the issue.

The dealer then told me there were no further firmware updates and that I just had to accept the BT functionality being unreliable. Inputting my Ghibli's VIN on UConnect's update website lead to an error saying the VIN was invalid, which makes sense since Maserati rebranded it to MTC. Even though I have already installed a wireless CarPlay unit, I still wanted BT to work since this specific music app I'm using has an official DTS surround sound plugin which sounds terrible over CarPlay and USB but would sound phenomenal over BT. Yes, I eventually took the risk of bricking my radio over trying to slightly improve audio playback quality.

I wanted to know if there are any updates at all for our UConnect. I knew that our radio, the RB5, is also used in Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300/300C, and some Fiats. I also knew from installing my own navigation maps that it is feasible to flash the navigation firmware from a Dodge Charger into a Ghibli to downgrade it to CTP13 so we can flash the new maps ourselves. I also knew that my UConnect has a software version of 15/09/D1 from the dealer menu. With all that, I Google'd "UConnect 15/09/D1" and lo and behold, there was actually a new update issued in early 2017 with the version 16/21/D7!

The patch notes:

TSB 08-004-17 refers to a software update for your Uconnect system:

• Does not accept Iraq when commanding “Set Target Country”.
• Some pop up message characters are displayed with “!#”.
• Traffic programming slow to start."

The line I highlighted caught my interest. Could this be the long-awaited BT fix? I decided to get my hands on a firmware update for Dodge Charger and risk it. Since we could downgrade our Garmin with their firmware, then surely we can upgrade our UConnect with their firmware too...

Why we didn't get this update? My guess is Maserati had already moved on to MTC+ by then (MY2017) and did not want to spend time on fixing older radios.

--------------------------------------------

Obtaining the New Firmware Image
How can we download the new firmware if the official website doesn't take our VIN? I went on CarGurus to look for a Dodge Charger for sale with the same RB5 nav as we do. Here is the VIN I used: 2C3CDXHG0EH321930.

Go to UConnect's update website and paste in the VIN: Software Update for Uconnect® - Check For Updates

Then, just follow the instructions presented to you. I wouldn't do the navigation update to CTP17 since some people imply it might disable downgrading to CTP13 to flash maps without a dealer visit.

A caveat though: I had to format my USB drive to FAT with Master Boot Record under macOS. For whatever reason, UConnect could not read my drive when I formatted it under Windows.

The update should take no more than 20 minutes. I recorded the process and here are my initial reactions:

SW version before the update:

The update prompt when the USB drive was inserted:

During the flash:

After the firmware update:

Observations
Removing paired devices is much faster and the pairing process is also a lot faster. I will need to give it a few days to see if the BT issues have truly been fixed. You are all welcome to install this update and see if the BT situation has improved!

Thanks for reading!
I found a newer dodge charger vin number we can use (2C3CDXL99GH354498). This is a 2019 update 1.2gb. Do you think this will work for our MTC?

Introdução - a história
Visitas repetidas a revendedores e substituição do módulo HFM geraram sucesso zero.

Vá para o site de atualização do UConnect e cole no VIN: Software Update for Uconnect® - Check For Updates

The line I highlighted caught my interest. Could this be the long-awaited BT fix? I decided to get my hands on a firmware update for Dodge Charger and risk it. Since we could downgrade our Garmin with their firmware, then surely we can upgrade our UConnect with their firmware too...

Why we didn't get this update? My guess is Maserati had already moved on to MTC+ by then (MY2017) and did not want to spend time on fixing older radios.

Observations
Removing paired devices is much faster and the pairing process is also a lot faster. I will need to give it a few days to see if the BT issues have truly been fixed. You are all welcome to install this update and see if the BT situation has improved!

Thanks for reading!
You ROCK man!!!!
